Many people make the mistake of using photos on their web pages that are downloaded directly from a digital camera. Digital photos should rarely be used on web sites without using software such as Adobe Photoshop to resize them for optimal web use.
The problem is that a digital photo directly from the camera contains too many pixels and is very large - normally more than 2mb in size. (i.e. more than 2.1 million bytes !!)
This is a very large image to view on a web page - up to 30 inches X 20 inches (2184 pixels X 1481 pixels). On a 19" monitor, when this picture is displayed, you would have to scroll left/right as well as up/down to see the whole picture. This is not ideal for visitors to your site. An image this size will also slow down the loading time of you page, since all these bytes must be transferred to the viewer's browser before the image can be viewed.
When a picture this large is re-sized to 800 X 542 pixels using Abode Photoshop or similar software, the new dimensions will be 11 inches by 7.5 inches. Still fairly large, but more managable.
What is more important though is that the new image size is now only 122kb - ie. 122,000 bytes....a lot smaller than the original.
