Rugby in Sacramento originally began around 1964 with the formation of the Sacramento State Rugby Club. Soon after graduation (around 1966) the Capital Rugby Football Club was created comprising of ex-collegiate players from Sac. State, UC Berkley, and other local universities. Thus began the first men's rugby team in Sacramento. Through the 70's and 80's a few other men's clubs in Sacramento emerged, however none had the staying power the Capital R.F.C. had. In fact, Joe Cavallaro (a Capital RFC founder) helped start High School Rugby in Sacramento in 1982 and he is presently the Head Coach at Del Campo. In 1985, a decision was made to merge the Sacramento area clubs into one team. Capital R.F.C., the Golden Domes (Capitol's "Over 35 Division"), Davis City RFC (former UCD players), Sacramento Old Boys (aka the "SOBs"), and River City RFC merged to become the Sacramento Rugby Football Club. Sacramento RFC is one of few teams in Northern California that is not in the Bay Area and draws players both domestically and internationally with strong ties to the local colleges and high schools. The Sacramento region is very centralized for rugby and boasts 10 high school teams (Jesuit, Burbank, Del Campo, Granite Bay, Oakridge, Roseville, Davis, Valley, etc.) as well as four powerhouse college programs (CSU Sacramento, UC Davis, CSU Chico, and the University of Nevada at Reno). |
