SAC CAPITALS 35 – Diablo Gaels 29 Referee: Scott Wood
TJs: John Compaglia (Gaels), Sacramento Player
A cold, overcast day at Danny Nunn Park greeted those who arrived for what is becoming an annual pre-season match-up. Sacramento has a great set of barriers for both sides of the pitch. Both teams scored off interceptions. Both teams scrummaged relatively well. Both teams had early problems with tacklers not getting to their feet before playing the ball. Overall, this was a very active and exciting match. Diablo maintained the lead until the 71st minute. Then Sacramento scored to cut Diablo's lead to one. The ensuing kickoff went over the dead ball line. Sacramento opted for a scrum, got stable ball, passed left, missed tackle or two, ball carrier scampers in for a try. The conversion was made. Diablo had about two minutes remaining. Unfortunately for Diablo, the Gods were preparing for the Raiders' and did not have enough in the tank to bless the visitors with a resurgent attack.

Seconds: Sac Capitals 10 – DIABLO GAELS 33 Referee: Bjorn Stumer
I was frankly surprised at the quality and speed of this B side match, especially if one considers the fact that most of the players were veterans of the A side match played just prior. Sacramento as the hosts were able to field a number of new faces, whereas Diablo had virtually their whole A side on the pitch. This reflected on the score, with Diablo putting in 3 tries and two conversions in the first half. Sacramento came back in the second half scoring three tries in the corner. This meant that all the kicks at the posts to convert went wide. Diablo however did not have that problem and converted both of the tries scored in the second half. As I said before, the fitness and skills exhibited were far above B side. Cooperating weather and the best safety perimeter around the pitch I ever saw contributed to the success of the day.

SAN MATEO 39 – Sac Capitals 0 Referee: Pete Smith

Seconds: San Mateo 7 – SACRAMENTO CAPITALS 25 Referee: Bjorn Stumer
Although Sacramento did not quite have a full "B" side and some of the players just finished playing the earlier "A" side match, they took to the field with vim and vigor and and easily dispatched a determined San Mateo. The sky had been gray and the weather cold all day, but just as the match started a glorious sun broke through regaling all with a gentle warmth at the soft under foot Martin Luther King pitch in San Mateo.

After the initial whistle, both sides came out fast firing on all pistons. This lasted the duration of a clean and competent match between two capable sides. The first half saw an unconverted try and a penalty for Sacramento, and no score on the board for San Mateo. San Mateo continued its attacks in the second half and scored a converted try. This however was not enough, as Sacramento, apparently immune from fatigue, stepped it up a notch and put in an additional three tries, one which was converted.

Overall a nice, clean, and fun match full of hard tackling and effective mauling. Competent and disciplined players that came to do serious work, coupled with a gracious crowd attending made this a good day for all involved.

BARBARIANS 45 – Sac Capitals 15 Referee: Paul Bretz
AR: John Pohlman
Barbarians won 45-15. Game was played on a postage stamp. Sac had good Lineout and a good maul but had a slow recycle rate which led to 2 intercepts that both went for tries.

Seconds: BARBARIANS 26 – Sac Capitals 15 Referee: John Pohlman
The newly formed Bay Barbarians hosted the Sacramento Capitals this past Saturday in Fremont. This was the first time I had seen the Barbarians. I was interested in seeing how they would compete going straight into division 1. Paul Bretz did the first game with me and a very qualified Sacramento injured player running touch.

Of note was that game was played less than four miles from my house. The Barbarians had secured a very small all-turf field at Irvington High School. The Barbos had a lot of people and extra players.

It was decided to play 20-25 minutes halves.

The Caps scored on three penalty kicks in the first half to take a 12-0 lead. The Barbos were less disciplined than the Caps but their fresh legs kept the pressure on. The Barbos scored 4 tries in the second half, three converted. The Caps made 2 more penalties to finish the scoring at Barbos 26, Caps 15.

Sac Capitals 19 – EAST PALO ALTO 32 Referee: Brian Zapp ERRRS

Seconds: Sac Capitals 17 – EAST PALO ALTO 26 Referee: Phil Akroyd
Seventeen hours after finishing my last game, I had another toughie at 28th & C Street in downtown Sac.

The sun was out, the good sized field in pretty good condition, give the last minute venue change and my boots still damp from Friday night.

All things in my head were telling me that this could be a fiery one. The last time I reffed this fixture, it was my third ever game assignment, twenty-one months ago. I probably wasn’t up to it and I abandoned the game in the second half after 3 yellow cards and a bench-clearing brawl. The A game was right on boiling point too, so I thought that tired bodies may result in slugging rather than running.

There were certainly a lot of challenges and most of it preventative – keeping people on feet at rucks, watching off the ball stuff and keeping the scrums fair but competitive. Of course, the first and last round of stupidity came at a maul, seven minutes in. Opposing lock and blindside flanker were both upright, got into a verbal disagreement (while involved in a moving maul), one threw an elbow, other retaliated with a punch and they both spent 10 off the field.

Sac charged into the lead and were up by 17 to 7 at half, then the sheer weight and speed of EPA ground them down. The Razorbacks got into their stride, pulled together and kept Sac out for the rest of the game.

Both teams were clearly getting tired but the game was too close to call early. EPA got the go-ahead try with twenty minutes left and took that 2 point lead to the final score of 17-26 with ten to go.

Once the silliness got out of the way in the first half, the second half was great fun. Both teams enjoyed it and the BBQ feed at the end topped off a great afternoon of Div 1 rugby. A good example to show exchange ref Brain Zapp (ERRRS) what Norcal rugby can be like

Sac Lions 9 – SACRAMENTO CAPITALS 13 Referee: Tim Luscombe
Referee Coach: Matt Eason
Not sure if Tim filed a report, but it was a close fought game, as was to be expected on a narrow, muddy field. The Capitols scored first with a try from Andrew Goodall, converted by Taylor McKillup, who also added a PK later in the game.

The Lions had their chances but mysteriously opted to repeatedly kick at goal in the second half, when they needed to score tries.

Seconds: SAC LIONS 29 – Sac Capitals 5 Referee: Phil Akroyd
Ten-a-side for two twenty minute halves. This was a bit of a non-event as both squads were indifferent toward playing a second game.

The Lions threw the ball around with greater skill than the Capitols who were, in their defense, blooding a number of smaller, inexperienced players. It’s a shame to have to go to the book in such a low key game, but when a Capitols player did a slide tackle on a Lion scoring under the posts (and just missed) that Landon Donavon would have been proud of, I had no other option. At least I got to AR the first game and worked on sprints in the B game. Not a complete waste of time.

[The Capitals abandoned the match, for safety concerns, with sixteen minutes left in the second half.]

OLYMPIC CLUB 24 – Sac Capitals 19 Referee: Scott Wood
TJs: Austin (OC, Former PITS); Mike Dopson/________ (Sacramento)
Evaluator: Mike Malone

The match was played on the Gaelic Athletic Association's field. Due to a communication breakdown, the field markings were a couple weeks old and the faded sidelines posed a potential problem (especially when no ARs are present). While faint touch lines were visible, they were "enhanced" with saucer cones on the intersections (e.g., midfield, 10 m, 22, etc).

Olympic Club is at the top of the standings whereas Sacramento Capitals are near the lower end. Apparently nobody told either team that. The visitors were on fire producing intense pressure on defense, forcing turnovers and capitalizing (no pun intended) off Olympic Club's mistakes. One of the Capitals' tries was scored off a floating Olympic Club pass that was easily intercepted. Both teams worked the length of the field back and forth until halftime where the visitors led 14-11.

The Olympic Club, fresh off a reading of the riot act, opened the second half up by scoring a try to give them the lead 16-14. Undeterred, the Capitals continued to move the ball around, mostly east-west, until their backs got it wide enough to race down the side. Down 19-16, Olympic Club put its forwards to work. Repeated infringements by the Capitals put them in a dangerous area. With five minutes remaining, the Capitals lost a man to the bin. Olympic Club found touch and, from a 5-meter lineout, formed a maul that pushed over for a grounding and a try to take the lead 21-19. Play resumed with Olympic Club again attacking downfield and finding itself with a penalty goal attempt at full time. Victory was theirs by a mere margin and for the first time this season Olympic Club found itself at the end of a match without a bonus point.

Sacramento nominated Rikus Pretorius as Olympic Club's man-of-the-match. Olympic Club put forth Joe Schmitt as Sacramento's man-of-the-match.

I would like to thank Mike Malone for taking time to critique my refereeing and to Ray Lehner and Ben Parker for their insight.

Seconds: OLYMPIC CLUB 41 – Sac Capitals 5 Referee: Greg Lundell
Referee Coach: Dave Williamson
